As you've probably gathered, if you've had a chance to read my previous posts, I've not been particularly happy lately. That doesn't mean, however, I've completely given up on happiness. Sometimes I don't feel worthy of happiness, but even at my lowest I'll always find something, or someone, to put a smile on my face. Just as our bodily instinct naturally fights for survival, so no matter what we're always looking for something positive whether we consciously realise it or not.

I've recently started a, what I call, Wellness Tracker. It's literally a document on my phone and I type the positives and negatives of each day - no matter how small of an action they are. I’m doing this to remind myself that what may not look like a big deal - I'm talking about the positives now - is actually something to be proud of. I'm hoping that over time this will encourage my mindset to be more positive than negative and help me work through this tough time.

"I want us all to feel worthy of happiness"

Today, March 20th, is the International Day of Happiness, established by the United Nations in 2012. I wanted to go list a few things that make me happy and grateful and hopefully they will be reminders of what makes you happy too:

  1. My cat waking me up in the morning: It can be annoying at 7am sometimes, but just hearing her little trill, or feeling her wet nose on my hand, is pure bliss. It forces me to not rush my morning and just enjoy the moment with this small, intricate animal that lives with and relies on me.

  2. Walking in the sun with a slight breeze and hardly any traffic: The silence in these moments really grounds me mentally; my senses are heightened and I’m more aware. I notice flowers dancing in the breeze and their vibrant colours, or how the pavement feels under my feet and the different textures on the ground. There’s something about having the sun and breeze on your face that is extremely wholesome.

  3. Cooking: Although it can be stressful at times because I may not have the motivation or energy to cook, ultimately cooking is my love language. I enjoy the magic of it all - the colours, and most of all eating! I wish I could also say the aromas, but I’ve had an issue with my nose for over a decade now and can’t really smell but I do get the odd scent every so often and it makes me smile.

  4. Family: There are some family members that just make me forget all my worries and in that moment with them I remember what happiness is all about.

I don’t want to bore you with a long list all about me but I would like to incite thought. During these days where I’m focusing on my mental health I’m reminded that I’m not the only person going through this experience; we’ll all experience depression at some point in our lives. I hope that you can be reminded, too, of the moments in life that bring happiness and I want us all to feel worthy of happiness.
